Lucky enough to have a job? Your tax bill might be going up! Despite the house now being controlled by Republicans who rode into Washington on promises to slash government spending, our deficit increased $105.8 billion in January alone. Of course, what’s another $105.8 billion when you’re already $14 trillion in debt? And while we’re at it, what’s one more fix when you’re already a junkie?
“But Charlie,” you ask, “what does this mean for me, one of the approximately 100 million Americans who earn enough money to actually pay federal income taxes?” Glad you asked! For the mathematically challenged, $105.8 billion divided by 100 million is $1,058. That means that this past month alone, our benevolent leaders tacked on that amount to your future obligations. Democracy works!
Let’s take a look at some of the things you, the typical hard working Chicagoan, could have purchased with $1,058. And remember, this is just the increase in the debt for one month, not actual government expenditures.
