Wisconsin Lawmakers Flee South of the Border — to Illinois!

The government shutdown in Wisconsin has been a boon to tourism in Illinois.

Talk about unintended consequences of government actions!

Democrat lawmakers in Wisconsin have failed to show up for work to block Gov. Scott Walker and Republican lawmakers from acting on proposals to change collective bargaining rules and make government workers pay more for their health insurance and pensions benefits.

Meanwhile, tens of thousands of teachers and other local and state government workers have flooded the capitol building to shout down and intimidate lawmakers. Schools have been closed in and near the state capital of Madison, and reports are flowing in of students being bused to the Capitol to join their teachers in protest.

The governor sent state police out looking for the missing lawmakers, but they could not be found . . . until now.

WTMJ-TV in Milwaukee is reporting the missing lawmakers have been found at the Best Western Clock Tower Inn in Rockford, a city just south of the Wisconsin state line in Illinois.

This, of course, is out of the jurisdiction of Wisconsin State Police.

One irony in this is that last month Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn and fellow Democrats imposed an astonishing 67 percent income tax hike and 46 percent corporate tax hike, prompting Wisconsin to advertise for Illinois businesses to move north. Who’d have guessed Illinois would instead end up hosting Wisconsin lawmakers?

I’m a lifelong Illinois resident and feel confident in saying I believe most Illinoisans would much rather keep our businesses and send back the Wisconsin lawmakers.

Here’s the whole WTMJ story.
