Heartland’s President Joseph Bast and Jim Lakely host an animated debate on education and race with Michael Bakalis, the author of “‘The Achilles Heel’ – A Citizen’s Guide to Understanding and Closing the Black-White Academic Achievement Gap in Our Schools.”
In Part 1, Joe, Jim and Mike talk frankly about why the black-white gap in academic achievement exists. Although Joe and Mike agree that both family and economic stability can help close the gap, they have very different ideas about how to school dropouts can get jobs. Mike asks who will hire them if the government doesn’t? He says even manufacturing jobs now require an education. Joe makes the rebuttal that many other jobs still require no education, and that there is simply no incentive for those on welfare to keep a job.
You’ll have to listen in on this lively talk yourself. Enjoy the podcast in the player above and stay tuned for part 2.
