The Heartland Institute recently hosted an event on the Parental Rights Amendment (PRA). Heidi Holan, Illinois state coordinator for ParentalRights.org, described court decisions that make necessary a constitutional amendment protecting the rights of parents. Holan explained the process for passage of the amendment and how states are pushing Congress to start taking the steps it must take.
Holan highlighted situations where parental rights were infringed by government statutes and regulations, incorrect medical diagnosis or disagreement about necessary treatment, and conflicts over who gets to determine how a child is educated. Several audience members brought up their own stories during the question and answer period.
“Parental Rights on the Hill” day was July 13. The day was a success for ParentalRights.org, with board members meeting with their local congressmen and Rep. Steve King (R-IA).
