Policybot Featured Work of the Week
This week’s Policybot featured work of the week comes from the Illinois Policy Institute (IPI). IPI has been on the front lines in the Illinois budget battle. So with the passage of the budget bill, IPI has released several articles breaking down the facts and figures and explaining what it means for the average taxpayer. The article titled “Illinois Lawmakers Pass Permanent Income Tax Hike, Override Rauner’s Veto,” lays out the facts. The plan is the largest permanent income tax hike in Illinois’ history. IPI also got into a bit of a social media war with State Rep. Emanuel Welch. This back and forth is outlined in part in an article titled “‘Illinois Math’ in one tweet.”
IPI also released a tool which allows you to see how much more in taxes you will be spending as an Illinois citizen.
Other Think Tank Works
Next, Donny and John talk about a Research and Commentary (R&C) produced by the Heartland Institute titled “Study Proposing 100 Percent Renewable Energy by 2050 is a Pipedream.” The R&C summarizes several responses to a Stanford study which suggests the USA could move to 100% renewable energy in 33 years. Reviews of this report by Carnegie Mellon University, MIT and other academic organizations reveal that this Stanford study is not worth the paper it is printed on.
Donny also makes mention of an article out of Missouri where the governor is approving a bill which would see the St.Louis minimum wage decrease. Justification for the move stems from the fact that minimum wage hikes hurt the very people the are designed to help.
In the last segment, Donny asks for John’s opinion on a proposed bill which would prevent states from creating obstacles to testing of self-driving cars.
