It seems that Pope Francis has learned little since his 2015 papal encyclical calling on the world to fight climate change by limiting the use of modern technologies and fossil fuels.

The Pope of Dialogue has thus far slammed the bronze doors of St. Peter’s on any dialogue on the issue of global warming.

In today’s holiday, best-of, edition of The Heartland Daily Podcast, we look back to the spring where Heartland led a delegation of experts to the Vatican to supply an opposition voice to the U.N. led climate summit preceding Pope Francis’ environment encyclical. For the first time, “Catholic leaders representing all regional and national bishops conferences” have come together in a “joint appeal.” According to reporting in the New York Times, Cardinal Oswald Gracias, archbishop of Mumbai, India, called the October 26 meeting at the Vatican a “historic occasion.”

A more conciliatory message on the virtues of capitalism from Pope Francis would be regarded as a welcome counterbalance to the collectivist hyperbole emanating from some of his advisors and one that would help heal the Vatican’s emerging rift with many Catholics.

Among all the hallelujahs and groans about Pope Francis and his highly politicized climate change encyclical Laudato Si’, there’s scant mention of who actually formulated its core content. It wasn’t the Holy Father.

On June 23, Science Director Jay Lehr was a guest on Common Sense Conversations Talk Radio, aired on dozens of stations across the country. Lehr was on to talk about the pope, climate change, the EPA and bureaucratic abuses.

How is it moral to deny cheap energy for the poorest people on earth so that the elitists can enjoy nature at their pleasure? How is it moral for Christian teaching to place the earth above human beings?

Had the pope bothered to consult scientists and economists outside his select circle of climate alarmists tied to the politically-founded and directed U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, he would have found almost every conclusion reached concerning the alleged coming climate catastrophe, the merits of fossil fuels, and the ability of low-density renewable energy technologies to raise the poor from poverty was dead wrong.

Sachs wrote about an event convened by Pope Francis on global warming and sustainability at the Vatican in Rome the prior week. Observing that only alarmists and advocates of population control – most notably, Jeffrey Sachs – were on the program, I decided Heartland should send some real scientists and other experts to Rome to provide a different opinion.
